Update on the Treatment of Onychomycosis

چکیده
Suggested scheme for the treatment of onychomycosis A stepped therapeutic approach to the treatment of onychomycosis is suggested. The risks of failure of treatment include the fungal involvement of the lunula portion, the lateral edge of the nail and the subungual area. Infection of the subungual area may lead to extensive onycholysis or dermatophytoma presenting as a hard subungual mass or as a distal to proximal yellow spike, both of which inhibit the penetration of the antifungals into the diseased areas.

New pharmacotherapy for the treatment of onychomycosis: an update.
INTRODUCTION Onychomycosis is an infection of the nail plate that is an important priority area for the development of antifungal drugs. The high incidence of relapse and reinfection often makes onychomycosis a chronic condition. The current gold standard is oral therapy, but the development of effective topical agents remains a priority as they have fewer systemic interactions. AREAS COVERED...
متن کاملA case of toenail Onychomycosis with Scopulariopsis Brevicalis
During 12 months survey on 33 patients with onychomycosis, only one of them showed infection due to scopulariopsis brevicalis. The case was a 38-year-old male with great toe nail lesion which was diagnosed as Trichophyton rubrum based on smear and culture. The patient was treated with 3 weekly pulses of itraconazole, 200mg twice daily during 3 months and showed marked clinical improvement. But ...
متن کاملOnychomycosis: A Rare Presentation of Fungal Urinary Tract Infection in an Extremely Preterm Neonate
Onychomycosis refers to nail infections, caused by fungi including yeasts and non-dermatophyte moulds. One or several toenails or fingernails (seldom all) may be involved in this condition. Many cases of fingernail onychomycosis are due to yeasts. Fungal infection has emerged as an important cause of neonatal infection, associated with significant morbidity and mortality, especially in very low...
متن کاملNew insight into the clinico-histomycological aspects of onychomycosis and a review of the literature

As systemic antifungal treatment is necessary in the majority of patients, appropriate diagnostic techniques are important to ensure a correct diagnosis and treatment. Objective: This study was carried out to evaluate the clinical, mycological, and histological aspects of onychomycosis in detail. Methods: A c...
متن کاملConcepts in Onychomycosis Treatment and Recurrence Prevention: An Update.
In considering therapy for onychomycosis, the most important factor to take into account is patient selection rather than treatment selection. Patients should be screened and evaluated for the extent of nail involvement, the amount of subungual debris, the degree of dystrophy, their ability and willingness to follow the regimen, and whether comorbidities are present that may affect the efficacy...
